Why I Love Gnocchi

Everyone has a favorite pasta, and mine is gnocchi. I'm not really sure why it is so far superior to all other pastas -- but since I am creating a blog dedicated to gnocchi, I might as well contemplate this issue.

Possible reasons why I love gnocchi:

1. Its uniqueness: Bowtie, linguine, or penne? Meh, I don't give a shit. Gnocchi? YES PLEASE.
2. Its versatility: potato gnocchi, rice gnocchi, sweet potato gnocchi, butternut squash gnocchi, etc etc.
3. Its doughy texture & hearty goodness.
4. It's the Italian cousin of the dumpling (the food of my ancestors).
5. "I love squishing it on the roof of my mouth!" - Cecelia S.
6. The word gnocchi.

Last night, while enjoying gnocchi and a glass of wine with my friends Morganne, Nicky, Sonja, and Cecelia, at Rex Cafe on Polk Street (review forthcoming), I decided that God put me in San Francisco for a reason, and that reason is to create a gnocchi blog.

Not that I don't have my work cut out for me. As was vigorously pointed out last night, I've never been to Italy and my name doesn't sound remotely Italian. But there is a lovely place in SF called North Beach where I can certainly pretend I'm Giada de Laurentiis and eat gnocchi among my people. Buon Appetito!

If all goes according to plan, next week will mark the beginning of Gnocchi Gnight, where a revolving set of characters will be accompanying me to various Italian restaurants in SF to sample the best gnocchi this city has to offer. Buckle your seat belts and get ready, kids.
